Renaissance Anatomy: The Body Revealed
Few fields of study changed as dramatically during the Renaissance as human anatomy. For more than a thousand years, the accepted understanding of the human body had been based on the writings of the ancient Greek physician Galen, whose work had been transmitted to the medieval West through Arabic translations. The problem was that Galen’s anatomy was based on dissections of animals, not humans. The Renaissance changed all of that. The rediscovery of human dissection, the publication of accurate anatomical atlases, and the integration of art and science transformed our understanding of the body and laid the foundations of modern medicine.
The Medieval Inheritance
In medieval Europe, the study of human anatomy was limited by both religious and practical constraints. The Church taught that the body was the temple of the soul and should not be disturbed after death. Practical considerations were also significant: the cold climate of much of Europe made it difficult to preserve bodies for study, and the shortage of cadavers limited the opportunities for hands-on investigation.
As a result, medieval medical students learned anatomy from texts, especially the writings of Galen. The bodies they studied were often those of animals, with the assumption that human anatomy was similar. This approach led to many errors that persisted for centuries: the idea that the liver had five lobes, that the heart had a porous septum, that the uterus was divided into multiple chambers.
The few opportunities for actual dissection came during the occasional autopsy, often performed to determine the cause of death in cases of suspected plague or poisoning, or in the anatomy demonstrations that were held in a few medical schools. These demonstrations, conducted by a professor reading from a text while a barber-surgeon did the cutting, were hardly the basis for a serious understanding of human anatomy.
The Recovery of Ancient Texts
The first step in the anatomical revolution was the recovery of ancient medical texts. The works of Hippocrates, the Greek physician of the 5th century BC, were rediscovered and translated into Latin. The works of Galen, which had been preserved in Arabic translations, were rendered into Latin by Renaissance humanists.
One of the most important translations was that of the De medicina of the Roman writer Celsus, translated in 1478. Celsus’s encyclopedia, although written in the 1st century AD, included accurate descriptions of many surgical procedures and anatomical observations that had been lost to the Latin West.
The most important translation for the history of anatomy, however, was the work of Renaissance humanist physicians — most prominently Guinter von Andernach (1505-1574), who taught Andreas Vesalius in Paris — on the anatomical writings of Galen. These translations, completed in the 16th century, made Galen’s work available in accurate Latin versions for the first time.
The Beginning of Human Dissection
The actual practice of human dissection began in a few Italian universities in the late 13th and 14th centuries. The University of Bologna, in particular, was an early center. The first documented public dissection of a human cadaver in Bologna took place around 1315, and the practice gradually spread to other universities.
The early dissections were limited by the scarcity of cadavers. Most universities were allowed only one or two bodies per year, often the bodies of executed criminals. The dissection was usually a public event, conducted in the winter months (to delay decomposition), and attended by students, faculty, and curious onlookers.
The Italian universities of the 15th century, especially Bologna, Padua, and Florence, became the leading centers of anatomical research. The humanist tradition, with its emphasis on direct observation and the recovery of ancient knowledge, was the perfect environment for the new anatomy. The work of Mondino de’ Luzzi (c. 1270–1326), whose Anathomia (1316) was the first modern manual of dissection, set the standard for anatomical study for the next century.
Leonardo da Vinci da Vinci: The Artist as Anatomist
The most remarkable figure in the early history of Renaissance anatomy is Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519). Trained as a painter in Florence, Leonardo brought to anatomy the same combination of intense observation, technical innovation, and scientific curiosity that he brought to his other interests.
Leonardo’s anatomical studies began in the 1480s, when he started dissecting human cadavers at the hospital of Santa Maria Nuova in Florence. Over the next three decades, he dissected perhaps 30 human bodies, including that of a 100-year-old man whose autopsy he recorded in detail.
Leonardo’s anatomical drawings are extraordinary. They show the bones, muscles, nerves, blood vessels, and organs with a precision and clarity that was not equaled for centuries. He pioneered the use of cross-sections, exploded views, and multiple perspectives, techniques that are now standard in anatomical illustration.
Leonardo’s anatomical work was not published during his lifetime. His manuscripts, including hundreds of pages of anatomical drawings, were scattered after his death and remained largely unknown until the 19th century. When they were finally published, they were recognized as some of the most remarkable achievements in the history of anatomy.
Andreas Vesalius: The Revolution
The figure most responsible for the anatomical revolution is Andreas Vesalius (1514–1564), a Flemish physician who became professor of anatomy at the University of Padua in 1537. Vesalius combined the humanist commitment to direct observation with the technical skill of a trained artist to produce the most important anatomical work of the Renaissance: De humani corporis fabrica (On the Fabric of the Human Body), published in 1543.
The Fabrica was a revolutionary work. Vesalius personally dissected the cadavers depicted in the book, and he drew or supervised the drawings of the anatomical figures. The result was an atlas of human anatomy more accurate and more beautiful than anything that had been published before.
The Fabrica is also a landmark of Renaissance book production. The book was printed in Basel by Johannes Oporinus, using high-quality woodcuts that were based on drawings by artists from the workshop of Titian. The woodcuts, in particular, are masterpieces of Renaissance visual culture, depicting anatomical figures in dynamic poses set in elaborate landscapes.
The Fabrica corrected hundreds of Galen’s errors. Vesalius showed, for example, that the human jawbone is a single bone, not two as Galen had claimed (based on animal dissections). He showed that the sternum has three parts, not seven. He showed that the liver has two lobes, not five. He demonstrated that the heart has four chambers, not the porous septum that Galen had imagined.
The Fabrica also revolutionized the practice of dissection. Vesalius insisted that the anatomist, not a barber-surgeon, should perform the dissection. He advocated for hands-on study of the body, rather than reliance on ancient texts. He demonstrated that the human body could be understood only through direct observation, not through the authority of ancient writers.
The Aftermath of Vesalius
The Fabrica had an immediate and lasting impact. The book was widely read and discussed across Europe, and it transformed the study of anatomy at universities from Padua and Bologna to Paris and Oxford. Within a few years, anatomists across Europe were correcting Galenic errors and producing new, more accurate descriptions of the body.
Among the most important followers of Vesalius:
- Realdo Colombo (c. 1516–1559), an Italian anatomist who succeeded Vesalius at Padua, made important discoveries about the structure of the heart and the pulmonary circulation.
- Gabriele Falloppio (1523–1562), also at Padua, gave the first detailed descriptions of the female reproductive system (the fallopian tubes are named after him) and the inner ear.
- Bartolomeo Eustachi (c. 1500–1574), an Italian anatomist who produced the Tabulae anatomicae (Anatomical Tables), a set of beautiful anatomical illustrations that were unfortunately not published until long after his death.
- William Harvey (1578–1657), an English physician who demonstrated the circulation of the blood in his De motu cordis (On the Motion of the Heart and Blood, 1628). Harvey’s work, building on the anatomical discoveries of Vesalius and others, transformed the understanding of the cardiovascular system.
The Role of the Artists
The collaboration between art and anatomy was crucial to the Renaissance revolution. Painters and sculptors needed to understand the body in order to depict it accurately, and they were often at the forefront of anatomical research. Leonardo’s anatomical studies, like those of Michelangelo and Raphael, were motivated primarily by the demands of art, but they contributed significantly to the science.
The most important anatomical book for artists was written by the German artist Albrecht Dürer. Dürer’s Vier Bücher von menschlicher Proportion (Four Books on Human Proportion, 1528), published posthumously, applied mathematical analysis to the proportions of the human body. Dürer’s interest in proportion was related to his interest in the classical ideal, and his work helped to establish the idea that the human body could be understood in mathematical terms.
Other artist-anatomists of the Renaissance included:
- Michelangelo, who dissected cadavers at the Santo Spirito convent in Florence and whose anatomical knowledge is evident in his paintings and sculptures.
- Raphael, who studied anatomy for his paintings and whose understanding of the body is reflected in the School of Athens and other works.
- Andrea del Verrocchio, who, according to a famous story, gave up painting after seeing the work of his pupil Leonardo, who had painted an angel with anatomical accuracy that exceeded the master’s own.
The Body and the Soul
The anatomical discoveries of the Renaissance raised profound philosophical and religious questions. The traditional Christian view was that the body was the temporary dwelling of the soul, and that its anatomy was less important than its spiritual significance. The Renaissance emphasis on the dignity of the human form, and the new science of anatomy, suggested a different view: the body itself was worthy of careful study and admiration.
The relationship between body and soul was a recurring theme in Renaissance thought. The Neoplatonists, including Marsilio Ficino and Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, argued that the human body was a microcosm of the universe, with the soul governing the body as the divine governed the world. The Catholic Church, especially at the Council of Trent (1545–1563), reaffirmed the importance of the body in Christian theology, including the doctrine of the resurrection of the body.
The Legacy of Renaissance Anatomy
The anatomical revolution of the Renaissance laid the foundations of modern medicine. The insistence on direct observation, the willingness to challenge ancient authority, the integration of art and science, the publication of accurate atlases — all of these were established in the Renaissance and became the foundation of the scientific medicine that followed.
The works of Vesalius, Leonardo, and their successors were not just scientific achievements. They were also works of art. The anatomical drawings of the Renaissance, with their dynamic poses, careful shading, and dramatic compositions, are among the great masterpieces of Renaissance visual culture. The combination of accuracy and beauty that they embody remains a model for scientific illustration to this day.
What follows is a short list of books that have held up well. None of them is perfect, and the best of them are the ones that admit it.
An honest gap. The standard accounts of this period are, in many ways, the accounts of the literate, the urban, and the relatively well-off. The picture you get from the literature is necessarily a partial one, and any responsible overview has to flag the parts it is leaving out.
